LAW AMENDMENT INTRODUCING A 15-YEAR AGE LIMIT FOR SOCIAL MEDIA USE PUBLISHED IN THE OFFICIAL JOURNAL

Law Nr. 7578, published in the Official Journal in May 2026, introduced significant obligations for social network providers and digital gaming platforms. The new regulation draws particular attention for its provisions aimed at strengthening the protection of children in digital environments.

Under the Law, social media platforms are required to establish age verification systems, with the aim of restricting access for children under the age of 15. In addition, the regulation envisages the development of safer and more segregated usage models for users in the 15–18 age group.

For digital gaming platforms, parental control mechanisms and child-protection measures are made mandatory. Platforms that fail to comply with the regulations may be subject to administrative sanctions, including advertising bans and bandwidth throttling.

These amendments are regarded as among the most comprehensive recent reforms in terms of expanding the responsibilities of digital platforms under Law Nr. 5651.
